GMS Art Gallery Celebrates Fifth Foundation Day of Art, Heritage & Culture in Chandannagar

Galerie de Monsieur Sur, popularly known as GMS Art Gallery, situated opposite the historic Patal Bari on the Chandannagar Strand, celebrated its 5th Foundation Day on 18th instant, marking five years of its journey towards promoting art, heritage, creativity and cultural engagement.
Founded by Sculptor Pradip Sur and Er. Amit Mitra, GMS Art Gallery was conceived as more than a conventional exhibition space. The two co-founders envisioned a welcoming cultural destination where artists, artisans, collectors, readers and art lovers could come together and experience the richness of Indian art and heritage.
Sculptor Pradip Sur, an alumnus of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, brings his artistic experience and longstanding association with sculpture and visual arts. Er. Amit Mitra, an engineer, entrepreneur and art curator, has contributed to the Gallery's development as a platform for artists, exhibitions and cultural initiatives. Together, they have sought to create an environment where art meets people in an informal, warm and accessible manner.
Over the past four years, GMS has hosted and supported various art exhibitions, cultural programmes and curated events, providing opportunities for established as well as emerging artists and artisans. Its heritage-rich location overlooking the Chandannagar Strand and the historic Patal Bari gives the Gallery a distinctive cultural ambience.
A Space for Books, Conversations & Coffee
An interesting feature of GMS is its dedicated space for book lovers. Visitors can sit and read from the collection or purchase selected books, encouraging a quiet engagement with literature alongside visual art.
Adding another dimension to the experience is the Gallery's in-house cafeteria, where visitors can relax and enjoy the ambience and artistic collection over a steaming cup of Makaibari tea or freshly brewed coffee. The concept is to encourage people to slow down, converse, read, appreciate art and spend quality time in a culturally enriching environment.
GMS Art Gallery also aspires to create a meaningful bridge between Indian artists, artisans and the global cultural community, providing greater visibility to India's diverse artistic traditions and contemporary creative expressions.
The celebration of its 5th Foundation Day on 18 September 2026 thus marked not only a significant milestone, but also a renewed commitment to making Chandannagar a vibrant destination for art, literature, heritage and cultural dialogue.
